Our Story

U+R Design Collaborative is a full-service architecture firm serving the Texas Hill Country, Austin, and San Antonio.  We offer services for projects of all types and sizes including: residential, multi-family, commercial, religious, and institutional buildings.  We endeavor to find innovative approaches to address the needs of our clients, best utilize sites, appropriately weigh cost and schedule. Our innovative methods maximize value and offer positive, delightful, and memorable contributions to the built environment and the landscape.

What does U+R mean?  The “U” stands for "urban", the “R” for "rural".  The distinct conditions, design opportunities, and challenges,  associated with each of these environments reflects our interests, breadth of work, and our approach to each design challenge we encounter.

Design Collaborative? U+R is the result of a partnership between Curtis Fish and Delineations, Inc., Marble Falls, to offer additional services in expanded regions.  Delineations, led by Jerome Rugen, which has over 30 years in the design business and hundreds of projects under its belt in the Texas Hill Country region, supports U+R’s staffing, operations, and adds immense local and regional expertise.  This collaborative relationship affords U+R tremendous flexibility to appropriately staff and technically support a range of project types and sizes with unique expertise.

Our Work

Our design collaboration allows us to specialize in a variety of project types.  We tailor our approach to each project according to its specific needs, requirements, and constraints.

Our Process

Pre-Design

Our first steps aim to identify and frame the problem: scope, site, context, program, and unique important issues.  A pre-design phase is often needed to establish goals, scope, budgets, or phasing for more complex or challenging projects.

Conceptual Design

Our next steps conceptualize the projects' form, organization, and orientation and include client meetings to review and incorporate owner feedback.

Design Development

Next, we further develop the design by articulating details, materials, and quantities, according to a client’s specific needs, desires, and personality.  At its conclusion, we issue a preliminary pricing set for residential projects, which represents about 80% of the design work.

Construction Documents and Construction Administration

We anticipate additional changes once a contractor is selected to fine tune budgets and coordinate engineering.  For commercial projects, we typically handle preliminary pricing or bid sets following engineering based on the desired project delivery method and the projects completion time line. The process is carefully tailored to each project, but its nature remains the same.

Fees

Fees are also tailored to the project and are based on the anticipated time to be spent on the project.  We have a variety of structures to suit most preferences. They include: a charge per square foot, a percentage of construction cost, an hourly fee, or a combination of the three.  Our aim in establishing a fee is to ensure we cover the costs associated with our time and expenses.  We maintain a talented and skilled staff supported with building information modeling software, which serves to ensure accurate documents and provide owners with many options of evaluating the design throughout the process.
